Roles and responsibility of project team
The DAAPU Team has a role to play in the management and successful implementation of the project. However, a team of four personnel will lead the implementation, executing the core activities of the project and measuring progress towards the objectives. The team is made up of Executive Director, who will spend about 30% time on the project; Project Coordinator expected to spend 100% time on the project; Field Officer 100% time; and Accountant spending about 40% time on the project. Volunteers serving with DAAPU will take part in project activities as may be relevant.
Position Background Role on Project
Chief Executive Director Holds first degree in Sociology and has several certificates in Advocacy, Monitoring and Evaluation, Project financing ,management and currently a Board member of the Ghana Coalition of NGOs In Health(GCNH). He also doubles as the Chairman for the Greater Accra Branch of the GCNH ,a position he has held for the past 5 years due to his impacts. Represent DAAPU as the CEO with responsibility of managing staff and dealing with the Board of Directors, he relates with donors, contracting and liaising with project partners, approve expenditures, provide backstopping to project activities and reviews reports before dissemination.
Project Coordinator Social worker with expertise in NGO management, Project management, Participatory Rural Appraisal, monitoring and evaluation. 7 years experience in social change facilitation, participatory assessment, and monitoring and evaluation. In charge of community / social mobilization, planning and execution of project activities, coordinating the project team and resources, and compiling reports. Undertake project monitoring and evaluation and stakeholder reviews.
Field Officer Community Mobilisation, Group Facilitation, Project Implementation, Monitoring and Evaluation Work on the field with the beneficiaries, volunteers etc.
Write activity reports to the Project Coordinator
Accountant ACCA with 8 years experience in financial management and project accounting. Receive, document and disburse project funds, keep accounting books and prepare financial reports to donors and management.
1. ORGANIZATIONAL PROFILE
DAAPU is a local not-for-profit non governmental organization established in 1999 by a group of academia, students , market women ,artisans, social workers and health professionals in the Greater Accra region ,with branches in 5 main regions , Western included. It started initially as a student advocacy group at the University of Ghana during the 2001 Premier West Africa University Games where the founders found the need to raise awareness on some social issues pertaining to students at the time of the competition .
DAAPU is aimed at improving health and alleviate poverty among urban poor and rural folks. DAAPU was formed at the time HIV&AIDS prevalence in the region was increasing hourly, putting the region in the lead in Ghana at the time. Driven by the need for urgent response to the fast-spreading HIV&AIDS pandemic, DAAPU started community response interventions to create awareness, educate and empower communities to curb the spread of HIV&AIDS while supporting infected and affected persons to live prolonged lives in stable conditions.
DAAPU understands strength in unity hence joins forces with other organizations through networking, coalition building, joint actions and service provision. As such, DAAPU initiated and leads a number of CSO networks and coalitions to draw on each others’ strengths for fighting a common course.
Legal Status: DAAPU is legally registered with the Registrar General’s Department and the Department of Social Welfare as a non governmental organization (a company limited by guarantee). DAAPU is also registered with all district and metropolitan assemblies in its operational areas.
Governance Structure: The organization is governed by a 7-member Board of Directors that formulates policies and provides programme and budgetary directives towards accomplishing of the organization’s mission. The Executive Director, Accountant, Coordinator and Administrative Assistant form the Management Team supported by seven part time volunteers with 300 Community Based Volunteers.
Sustaining community development through self initiatives
Mission Statement :
To promote development and empowerment of communities and individuals through a multi-sectorial collaboration approach to ensure sustainability of project implementation and policy influence.
1. To assist national effort aimed at improving the socio-economic and health status of the populace.
2. To contribute to national efforts at reducing HIV&AIDS and its effects on Ghanaians through behaviour change communication, care and support for infected and affected persons.
3. To offer relief service to communities and assist street children to acquire skills to make a living towards poverty reduction
4. To provide technical support and service to local government authorities and the private sector on issues relating to the capacity development in environmental issues, agriculture, natural resources, health, education, water and sanitation.
5. To contribute to policy enhancement and good governance at local and national levels for the fulfilment of the rights of the people.
MAJOR ACTIVITES :
HEALTH PROMOTION Social mobilization and Community education/sensitization , Testing and Counseling, case detection and referrals on Tuberculosis (TB) , HIV and AIDS , Childhood Immunization ,Malaria , Distribution and hanging of Insecticide Treated Nets (ITNs) ,enhancing child nutrition and training and engaging community –based volunteers.
ENVIRONMENTAL CARE: CLIMATE CHANGE ,INTERNATIONAL WATERS, AGRICULTURAL FARMING/ AFFORESTATION , FOOD SECURITY , SANITATION AND PRACTICE OF HYGIENE:
Encourages farming projects across Ghana ,engaging indigenous farmers using the organic farming approach. Deepens Right Holders and Duty Bearers engagement through the facilitation and creation of community engagement platforms. Tree Planting and periodic clean –up campaigns engineered by communities and intensifying household waste separation etc.
MAJOR ACHIEVEMENTS :
HIV/AIDS Counseling and Testing :5,000 adults tested and 300,000 Condoms successfully distributed . Positive clients received appropriate directives.
Family Planning : over 5,000 adolescents ,young adults and expectant parents/ and mothers sensitized with quality information on access and rights .
Ante- Natal Care (ANC) : Over 3,000 expectant mothers sensitized to receive early ANC.
TUBERCULOSIS (TB) : Educated and sensitized over 30,000 people ,Case detection and ,referrals of 250 suspected cases to health facilities for sputum collection screening .
MALARIA: Reached about 50,000 of the general population with quality information on prevention ,cure and treatment, distributed 3,000 ITNs to pregnant women and Children under 5 years.
Trained 300 volunteers in TB,HIV/AIDS ,Malaria and Environmental issues and operating in the various operational communities
Farming to improve nutrition and secure the food sources ; working currently with over 2,000 indigenous farmers in 28 communities and making sure their health needs are well catered for .
Held 5 successful community engagements on Social Accountability Initiative ( Right Holders and Duty Bearers engagements)
CONSTRAINTS/CHALLENGES: DAAPU like any other growing organization is faced with some challenges that does not permit a continuous community intervention:
• DAAPU lacks vehicles to help increase its community outreaches and create a broad based impact.
• Lacks continuous and consistent flow of project funding and hence limiting its impact.
• Needs current state of the arts office automations for easy access and dissemination of information and improve research and data gathering.
