The United Nations mandated University for Peace (UPEACE) was created in December 1980. It is a unique international institution with more than 60 nationalities represented among faculty, staff, and student body. Its beautiful campus overlooks Costa Rica’s Central Valley, San Jose, Costa Rica.
UPEACE upholds commitment to human rights in the design and delivery of all our academic activities. The incredible diversity of our campus allows participants and faculty to collaborate and collectively build a unique learning experience in a multicultural and intimate environment respectful of gender equality.
UPEACE offers Master’s and Doctoral Degree Programmes in Peace and Conflict Studies for students from all parts of the world. Students receive a high quality education in a unique atmosphere with a focus on multicultural perspectives, theory, and practical applications.
Master’s Degree Programmes:
UPEACE embraces an innovative and inter-disciplinary approach to both the pedagogy and content of post-secondary learning. Our nine master programmes offer specialized, multi-disciplinary courses and our international faculty use engaging and participatory teaching models for face-to- face classroom instruction which address various areas related to peace and peacebuilding immersed in cutting-edge topics such as:

- Water Cooperation and Peace – (Joint Educational Programme with the Institute for Water Education (UNESCO-IHE) and Oregon State University (OSU))

The Online MA programme Sustainable Peace in the Contemporary World prepares competent professionals to resolve pressing and complex global problems that concern humanity, and to create new approaches to old problems through various levels of analysis and action.

The UPEACE Doctoral Programme seeks to provide candidates with a holistic and interdisciplinary understanding of diverse themes and problems in peace and conflict studies as well as strategies in peacebuilding.
Semester Abroad Programme:
Those interested in exploring academics at UPEACE, and who already have an undergraduate degree are welcome to take courses offered as part of our Semester Abroad Programme. The student can either take a semester from any of our MA programmes to validate credits at their universities or request an individualized set of courses (a maximum of 12 credits) from different programmes according with his/her needs.
Undergraduate Credit Building Programme:
For outstanding undergraduate students in their final year, UPEACE offers them the opportunity to participate in our Undergraduate Credit Building Programme which is an exciting and challenging way to earn credits that can be transferred to their university. The student can choose from taking individual courses to live the UPEACE experience up to completing almost a whole semester (12 credits) so that he/she can complete with his/her Undergraduate Semester Abroad requirements to and finish with undergraduate studies. The option of requesting admission into UPEACE MA programmes after finishing with undergraduate studies is available as well as validation of previous UPEACE credits obtained in this option.
