We are looking for a Data Science Research Fellow to join our team and play a leading role in the design, development and implementation of Nesta’s ambitious programme of data-driven research on the creative economy.

The creative economy is diverse, including film, TV, music, software and advertising, and is an area where Nesta has built up a global reputation for original and influential research. Recent projects include analysis of millions of online job ads data to understand employer demand for skills, building an interactive map of museums, and a groundbreaking analysis of gender imbalances in the British film industry.

    About the role

Our successful candidate will join Nesta’s rapidly growing community of data scientists and analysts, who meet regularly to discuss their work and explore opportunities to advance Nesta’s mission through data analytics. Working closely with the Executive Director for Creative Economy and Data Analytics, you will analyse relevant data using data science methods, including supervised and unsupervised machine learning, network analysis and natural language processing techniques. You will also be expected to:

    • Identify relevant research questions and address them with data science methods
    • Explore opportunities to apply new data science techniques
    • Communicate findings through conference and peer reviewed papers, research notes, blogs, data visualisations and open source software
    • Participate in the development of new research proposals for funders, including the UK Research Councils

    To secure this opportunity

You will hold a PhD qualification in a relevant quantitative discipline (e.g. data science, computer science, statistics, econometrics or operations research), although candidates with an excellent master’s degree in a relevant subject will be considered if they also have relevant professional experience. You will have strong quantitative data processing and analysis skills, plus demonstrable expertise in data science-relevant programming languages, specifically Python or R.

An outstanding communicator, with a proven ability to present research findings in a compelling and credible way, you must be a target and performance-driven individual with a collaborative and flexible approach to work.
