Global Social Innovation Challenge
Our world needs changemakers who create new models and work within new paradigms of sustainable change. Innovate with us and be part of the eighth annual (and first Global) Social Innovation Challenge, and recognize, resource, and reward student-led social ventures focused on sustainable change.
The Social Innovation Challenge (SIC) powered by the University of San Diego’s Center for Peace and Commerce (CPC) has a 7-year track record of preparing and launching social innovators in the United States and Mexico.
Starting in 2017, the challenge has become the Global Social Innovation Challenge (Global SIC), and now welcomes participation from college / university students across the entire world!
The Global SIC is a social venture pitch competition that recognizes, resources, and rewards student-led social ventures focused on sustainable change. Participants are asked to develop a nuanced understanding of a social or environmental issue of their choice (by analyzing the problem and the solution landscapes) and identify gaps in the existing approaches. Then, they are asked to identify a potential solution that can address the gap/s, has measurable positive impact, and can be financially sustainable & scalable. Finally, students create a compelling value proposition, build a viable business plan, and pitch the venture to a panel of judges for seed funding and other resources!
Can you imagine your students growing their global networks and competing on-stage with student innovators from the world-over? Register your university/college today to give your students access to $50,000+ in seed funding and a priceless experience of learning, value formation, and networking.
“The Social Innovation Challenge helped me and my business take an idea and turn it into a fully developed business. The support, ideas, and mentorship of the SIC really helped us turn our idea into something tangible.” – 2017 SIC participant
The Global SIC is an opportunity for students to turn their ideas for sustainable social or environmental impact into reality via resources, mentorship, and a chance to secure seed funding. Participants are asked to select a social or environmental issue of their choice, and work through the following stages:
- Study the existing landscape of the problem to discover gaps in existing solutions (if any) and identify levers of change.
- Come up with a promising solution and start perfecting it by working with all of the stakeholders.
- Prepare a business plan and develop a pitch to obtain funding from potential funders.
Up to two finalist teams from each participating institution will get to compete (in-person or virtually) for over $50,000 in seed funding at the final pitch competition in San Diego, CA, USA, scheduled for June 23-24, 2018.
Global SIC is also an emerging platform for students around the world to build and connect with a community of like-minded individuals and organizations who are passionate about creating positive change in the world.
Global SIC is open to all degree and diploma-granting post-secondary education institutions located anywhere in the world that register for Global SIC participation by October 31, 2017. Each participating institute will receive full support from us to run the first two (of the three) stages of the challenge at their institute, and CPC will host the third stage (the global final) for the finalist teams from each participating institute here in San Diego in June 2018. Institutions would align their local SIC branding to the Global SIC, using resources provided by the Center for Peace and Commerce at the University of San Diego.
Who is Eligible to Participate?
Any current student (as of December 14, 2017) of a participating institution can participate in the Global SIC individually or as part of a team (with maximum of four members per team). At least one team member must be a current undergrad / postgraduate/ doctoral student as of December 14, 2017 at any of the participating institutions (see the Global SIC homepage for a current list of participating institutions).
