    Education in Emergencies

Theories and Methods – Curricula and Educational Media –
    Teachers and Teacher Training

    Braunschweig, Germany
    24.07.-28.07.2017

The Georg Eckert Institute for International Textbook Research (GEI) is pleased to announce the fourth Georg Arnhold International Summer School, which will take place in Braunschweig, Germany, from 24 to 28 July 2017.

The Summer School will bring together early-career scholars, senior researchers and practitioners to critically explore theories and methods, curricula and educational media, the role and training of teachers of Education in Emergencies (EiE), focusing on all educational levels as well as formal and non-formal educational practices.

Education is a fundamental human right, of which millions of children and young adults around the world have been deprived as a result of both natural and man-made emergencies, including environmental disasters and wars. It is not only recent events, such as the current refugee crisis emerging from the war in Syria, that have led to a growing awareness on an international scale of how important it is to ensure that this fundamental human right is respected. Accordingly, education has increasingly become an integral part of the humanitarian response to emergency situations and, as such, the object of an emergent and fast-expanding field of research.

Scholarship in the field of Education in Emergencies has attempted to shed light on questions related to, among other things, access to education, curricula and educational media, teachers and teacher training, economics and funding of education programs, and the roles and interaction of local and international actors in emergency situations. While significant achievements have been made, both in research and practice, many issues and questions remain insufficiently explored.

The GEI thus invites original contributions that draw upon diverse contexts, theories, and methods to shed light on questions pertaining to, but not restricted to, the following aspects:

Theories and Methods of Education in Emergencies

Which theories can render research findings applicable to different contexts? How can we tackle ethical questions such as the Eurocentric perspective on conflicts, humanitarian aid and education in emergencies? Which methods appear promising for research and evaluation of EiE programs or materials?

    Curricula and Educational Media

Who has access to formal or non-formal programs for EiE and how are they implemented? What are the curricula contents for EiE; how are they developed and by whom? What is the potential of new education technologies in EiE?

Teachers and Teacher Training for Education in Emergencies

Who trains the teachers and how? What kind of teacher training is appropriate for these contexts? How can we validate pupil or teacher qualifications? What is the role of voluntary work in EiE?

The week-long Summer School will provide an interdisciplinary and international forum that will allow participants to debate and critically reflect upon key research questions, methods, findings, and their implications. The academic program of the Summer School will include lectures and workshops by renowned experts, offering participants the opportunity to widen their research perspectives and improve their methodological competencies.

    HOW TO APPLY

The Summer School primarily welcomes applications from doctoral candidates and post-doctoral scholars from the humanities and social sciences, particularly education, history, political sciences, sociology, law, anthropology, and psychology. Practitioners working for international organizations and NGOs in the relevant fields are also welcome to apply. Applications from students enrolled in a Master’s program and recent graduates with a Master’s degree will be considered in exceptional cases.

The GEI invites suitable applicants to submit abstracts of no more than two pages together with a CV, a list of publications (if applicable), and the completed application form, which can be downloaded at http://www.gei.de/en/fellowships-awards/georg-arnhold-program/summer-school.html.

Submissions should be made electronically. All documents must be in PDF format, and the total file size may not exceed 3 MB (file name: last name, first name). Please send applications to summerschool@gei.de, with the subject line “Arnhold Summer School 2017.”

The deadline for completed applications is April 1, 2017. Successful applicants will be notified by April 19, 2017. Drafts of the respective presentations should be ready for circulation amongst the participants by July 13, 2017.

The GEI plans to publish the proceedings of the Summer School and will ask participants and experts to submit articles for publication based on their presentations. The respective presentation should therefore be provided as draft before the beginning of the Summer School.

The working language of the Summer School will be English. No registration fees apply. Accommodation and meals will be provided for all participants, and economy-class travel expenses will be reimbursed.
