Berlin (Germany) 26 – 28 October 2016

Global Perspectives brings together CEOs from key national and leading international civil society organisations (CSOs) with high level representatives from politics, the corporate sector and academia to address some of the world’s most pressing challenges. In a highly interactive format, participants propose topics and workshops based on their experience and devise common strategies to deal with opportunities, challenges and trends which are impacting CSOs.

At Global Perspectives, participants are provided with opportunities to:

  • Network and build alliances
  • Exchange experiences and ideas to drive incremental change
  • Produce concrete outcomes on specific topics

The SDGs provide a historic opportunity to drive transformational change. Successfully implementing these global goals requires comprehensive contributions from all sectors alike; governments, business, academia and civil society. This, however, is significantly challenged by the worrying global trend of shrinking civic space. Global Perspectives aims to address this challenge by focussing the conference on the question:

How can civil society actors worldwide protect and expand civic space, in order to make meaningful contributions to the implementation of the SDGs and climate goals?

For decades the space for citizens’ political engagement has been expanding, together with the advance of democracy, around the world. Lately however, the space for civic engagement is shrinking. This development can be observed not only in the Global South but also in the Global North, not only in authoritarian regimes but also in democracies. Most worryingly, the infringement on citizens’ rights increasingly looks like a long-term trend with governments around the world learning from each other how best to curtail their citizens’ rights.

This comes at a time when we are confronted with persistent poverty, growing inequality, climate change and other planetary boundaries and need to fundamentally redefine how we go about development globally. History shows that most of the social, environmental and political progress we have made in the past came from citizen action challenging the status quo. Without the active and unrestrained engagement of civil society around the globe the transition towards a just, equitable and sustainable world will not be possible. Securing and expanding the space for civic participation is an indispensable prerequisite for a peaceful future of humanity.
