DPA chief visits DPRK
Under-Secretary-General Jeffrey Feltman began on 5 December a four-day visit to the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK). The visit comes days after Mr. Feltman called the situation in the Korean Peninsula following the country’s latest ballistic missile launch the “most dangerous to peace and security in the world” and underlined the need for a political solution. The invitation to visit the DPRK was issued in late September, and the trip was confirmed on 30 November.


After DPRK missile launch, UN political chief urges Security Council to ‘do all it can’ to prevent escalation
29 November – Following the latest ballistic missile launch by the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), which its official media claimed is “capable of striking the whole mainland of the United States,” the top United Nations political affairs official on Wednesday urged Security Council members to unite in preventing an escalation.

UN voices support for Somali Government’s efforts at first-ever security conference in Mogadishu
4 December – At Somalia’s first-ever security conference, hosted by the country’s Federal President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed “Farmaajo” in the capital, Mogadishu, participants agreed to speed up security sector reform and develop a plan to transfer primary responsibility for the country’s security from the United Nations-backed African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) to its own security forces.

UN chief calls for end to all armed clashes, airstrikes in Yemen
3 December – United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has called on the parties to the conflict in Yemen to cease all air and ground assaults, expressing deep concern about the “sharp escalation” of armed clashes and airstrikes in the capital, Sana’a, and other parts of the war-torn country over the past several days.

UN chief condemns terrorist attack against college dormitory in Pakistan
1 December – United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres on Friday condemned the terrorist attack against a university dormitory in northern Pakistan that killed at least nine people and injured many others.

Security Council hails ‘remarkable achievements’ one year after Colombian peace accord
30 November – The Security Council on Thursday marked the one year anniversary of the signing and entry-into-force of the peace agreement between the Government of Colombia and the Revolutionary Armed Forces (FARC-EP).

On Day of Solidarity, UN reaffirms two-state solution as only answer to ‘question of Palestine’
29 November – The Question of Palestine is inextricably linked with the history of the United Nations and is one of the longest-standing issues on the Organization’s agenda, United Nations Secretary-General António said in his message commemorating the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People.
