This ground-breaking event at American University on Monday and Tuesday, January 22 and 23, and will bring together 150 leaders in impact investing, social entrepreneurship, and peacebuilding to explore one of the most pressing challenges of our time—how to transform conflict-affected communities into peaceful and prosperous ones.

With 40 speakers from around the world—from the founder of the Institute for Economics and Peace to local peace entrepreneurs—this event will bring together a unique mix of experts to work collaboratively to create innovative solutions for peace and prosperity. JOIN US!

Social Entrepreneurs + Peace

Entrepreneurs from PeaceStartup in Colombia, StartUp Middle East from Iraq, the Epp Peace Incubator in Canada, and 734 Coffee in South Sudan will be joining us to share their stories and marketing and design experts from Mean CommunicationsFifth TribePartnersGlobal, and the World Ventures Group will discuss how to creatively market peace enterprises. Representatives from the PeaceTech Lab, Pathfinder Consulting, and C5 Accelerate will talk about how to generate, incubate, and accelerate new ideas for peace and prosperity.

Impact Investors + Peace

Impact investment advisory firms Innovest Advisory and Quantified Ventures, the Jlens Investor Network, and the United Nations will be presenting about new ways to finance peace, as will the co-founder of Affinis Labs, an award-winning social innovation firm that has partnered with Elixir Capital to launch a $250 million investment fund for startups and growth stage businesses in global Muslim communities and beyond. We will also hear from the co-founder of Verdant Frontiers, a for-profit conglomerate and venture capital firm specializing in start-up and early stage investments in Africa.

Experts from World Vision, the International Finance Corporation, and the Center for International Private Enterprise will discuss how peacebuilding and investment can reduce conflict in fragile states, and representatives from the UN Global CompactCDA Collaborative, and a business professor from American University will talk about conflict sensitive business and investment practices in emerging and frontier markets.

Partnerships + Peace

We will hear from the head of social impact at Away, a travel products company that has made a unique partnership commitment with Peace Direct to support peace around the world. The final panel will include the Director of Social Impact of Concordia, an organization that builds meaningful partnerships for positive social impact, the Director of Strategic Partnerships for Cure Violence, an organization that aims to stop the spread of violence using a public health model, and the CEO of Building Markets, an organization that builds markets, creates jobs and sustains peace in developing countries by championing local entrepreneurs and connecting them to new business opportunities.

Tech + Peace

At the end of the Symposium on January 23, participants will be invited to join C5 Accelerate for an afternoon of getting to know peace entrepreneurs at the PeaceTech Accelerator housed at the United States Institute of Peace. Guests will have the opportunity to meet Accelerator alumni along with local peace entrepreneurs for demos and networking over drinks and light snacks.

Food + Peace

Lunch for the Symposium will be catered by a member of the Conflict Cuisine program at American University, which looks at how food of the diaspora communities in Washington D.C. reflects the state of conflicts around the globe.
