Many of us who seek success have a habit of planning. We as a human being have a lot of ambitions to achieve in life. Despite everyone has some kind of planning and desires at least inside the mind, they fail with time. So today I’m going to tell you about the number one skill to success which is: focusing
In the world today, everything around you is going to distract you from achieving your goals. The reason is that many goals have to be reached other than your goals. In addition, there are many different individual and collective plans which take a place every day. The Media as an example is one of the distractive tool, particularly social media including Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, YouTube, …etc. They are not only trying to notify you but even more to distract you. Of course, I invite you to engage with the social media but definitely not to spend your whole life on it, and keep in mind, social media is a means and not an end.
Focusing is to be totally immersed in the now, and to merge into the present moment. So if you are at work it means you’re mindfully at work. If you’re at home it means you’re at home 100% spending time with your family, not with anything else. If you’re studying it means you’re totally engaged in studying. It’s just doing one thing at a time.
I’m writing what you are reading now, that means I’m only doing one thing right now which is writing, and only writing, while it’s supposed that you’re doing only one thing as well, which is reading.
But what if you are in a workplace and thinking about problems in the home? what if you are at home staying with your family but your mind is flying away? Aha, you are lost! you are out of control. Your mind doesn’t exist! It’s traveling either to past or future and the present moment which is really the life: is lost. Indeed this is the daily life of the majority, you can experience it when you look at people’s faces who are waiting at bus stands and train stations. Obviously, you will see phantoms! Most of them are not here and now, they are directed by unconscious thoughts. Their bodies are there but their minds are flying away.
Back to the point, Focusing on what you want is the other aspect of focusing. If you don’t focus on what you want absolutely you will focus on what you don’t want, for example instead of focusing on what you don’t want “I don’t want to lose my job” you should focus on “I’m ready to change” or “I’m courageous enough to promote my skills for better opportunities”. Moreover If you don’t focus on what you want, you will be a share for other plans, you will become an intention of their intentions (especially clerics and politicians) and of course, you will be a mere task in their projects. If so, you lose your self.
So first, all you need is to know what you want, then focus on achieving it, do practical actions to manifest what you want. Create the plans and focus on applying them. Even if many things around try to scatter you just remain focus on what you want. Don’t give permission to anyone to hijack your awareness. Your awareness is yours and you are the only one can shift it.
The last point on focusing is to have an open mind that is open to everything and attached to nothing. Being attached to achieve what you want will only cause suffering. It’s when you feel bad feelings because you don’t get what you want. Therefore focusing is to have positive feelings, and enjoy the journey of achieving. If you don’t achieve what you want, try it again, if you couldn’t just change the plan and move on with focusing on what you want now, and so on.
Finally, there are a lot of ways that keep your focus on your goals. One of the things I recommend is to create a focus poster. It’s a way to always remind you to be on the track. Write a summary of your goals and plans on the poster, put it in a place where you mostly spend time. Also, you can use mind mapping techniques which effectively help you to summarize your plan.
And remember again the key to success is to FOCUS
