Announcing the 11th Annual Summer Institute for Faculty

(this is a sponsored post on PCDN)

The Kroc Institute is pleased to announce that the 11th Annual Summer Institute for Faculty — “Teaching Peace in the 21st Century” — will be held June 10-14, 2019, at the University of Notre Dame. The Summer Institute is a one-week program for university and college faculty who would like to develop a new peace and justice studies program, or take their existing peace studies courses and program to the next level of design and rigor. Since its inception, the Summer Institute has enrolled more than 350 faculty from over 100 institutions on five different continents.

Your Hosts

The University of Notre Dame’s Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies, a leading center for interdisciplinary peace studies, based in the newly opened Keough School of Global Affairs, has a commitment to the strengthening of peace and justice studies programs, and the training of those who teach, or wish to teach, in this field. The week-long program is offered on the campus of the University of Notre Dame.

Director and Staff

The Summer Institute is directed by George A. Lopez, an internationally recognized authority on peace studies program development, former Vice President of United States Institute of Peace, and Rev. Theodore M. Hesburgh, C.S.C., Professor Emeritus of Peace Studies at Notre Dame. The Summer Institute is staffed by over a dozen faculty and staff from the Kroc Institute.

Program

Participants will engage with leading thinkers about the contemporary parameters of peace and justice practice, research, and teaching; explore the pedagogical, administrative, and public relations challenges of such programs; and collaborate with their team (ideally three or more faculty members from the same campus) on course development and programming.

Schedule

The Summer Institute begins in the early afternoon, Monday, June 10, and ends at noon on Friday, June 14. Mornings typically feature various sessions and workshops on critical themes in the field and program development. Afternoon sessions allow participants to work intensely with their team and faculty consultants on campus plans.

Costs

$225 per participant (ideally each team should include at least three faculty members from a single institution). Participants are responsible for the cost of transportation to Notre Dame and lodging (dorms and other low-cost alternatives are available). The Kroc Institute covers breakfast, dinner, snacks, and all program materials.
